Adult Literacy Program & ESL:

Funded in part by a grant from the California State Library, the Adult Literacy Services program, “Let’s Read Altadena,” of the Altadena Library District has been serving the residents of Altadena since 1988. Instruction is provided by volunteer tutors who have completed a self-paced, online tutor training course. Literacy is currently housed at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library and Literacy Center.

Literacy Tutoring (One-on-One): Learners are matched with a tutor for regularly scheduled study sessions. Working with a tutor can help:

  • Improve reading skills
  • Learn to write better
  • Increase reading comprehension
  • Enhance speaking/pronunciation
  • Gain basic computer skills
  • Reach other goals such as preparing for a written driver’s license test or writing a resume

English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes: Classes are designed to help those obtain basic English fluency. Classes are held Mondays through Thursdays mornings at 10:30am – 12:00pm at the Bob Lucas Memorial Library (2659 Lincoln Avenue).

Conversation Club: This weekly club on Thursdays at 10:30am is a great opportunity to chat with other English language learners in a relaxed and comfortable environment. You will pick up new vocabulary, improve your English fluency, and sharpen your pronunciation skills.

There is no fee for tutoring or for ESL classes. Speakers of other languages may receive tutoring once they have mastered basic spoken English or may join our ESL class for beginners. To be eligible for tutoring, the participant must be able to complete the intake form by him or herself in English.

Want to become a participant in any of the above programs? Fill out the following form or call (626) 798-0833 extension 102.

Interested in Becoming a Tutor?

Tutors empower adult learners by teaching basic reading, writing and functional literacy skills. After completing a self-paced, online training module and being matched with a learner, tutors and learners meet 1 to 2 hours per meeting at least once a week at the library or other location based on their own schedules. The Library requires a minimum commitment of six months.
