Our Summer at Altadena Libraries: 2023 Was a Success!

If you participated in our summer reading challenge and/or programs, we invite you to provide us with feedback as we start preparing for next summer. Fill out our summer evaluation survey here.

June 1- July 31

Celebrate Our Summer at Altadena Libraries, where you can indulge your curiosity, explore new interests through our programs, and connect with neighbors of all ages at events.

We also invite you to “Find Your Voice” through our all ages reading challenge. Log the minutes you read to earn badges and help our community reach our reading goal of 250,000 minutes!

By reading 500 minutes and completing the challenge, you will be entered into a virtual drawing for a prize.

Completion Prizes for All Ages Reading Challenge

  • Babies and toddlers will be entered to win a Kidspace Children’s Museum membership.
  • Children (ages 5-12) will be entered to win a membership to Fly High Adventure Park in Altadena.
  • Teens (ages 13-17) will be entered to win a pair of Universal Studios Hollywood tickets.
  • Adults (ages 18+) will be entered into a variety of virtual drawings.

You must earn a completion badge in order to be entered into the drawing… so start reading!

Everyone who signs up for Summer Reading — which is tracked through the Beanstack app or website — will receive a free book (while supplies last).

Sign Up for Summer Reading at Our Kickoff Event – June 3!

The easiest way to sign up for our summer reading challenge is to join us at our Summer Reading Kickoff Event, Saturday, June 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Main Library, where we’ll celebrate with a carnival-style launch party! Enjoy a musical performance of ‘Something to Crow About’ by the Bob Baker Marionettes, The Tropic [food] Truck, Love on Demand Global typewriter poetry, face painting, crafts, and more!

Upcoming Summer Reading Events

A Case for Summer Reading

Summer reading programs are more important than ever. It is normal in summer months for students to experience “summer slide,” or learning loss, over the break from school.  The Altadena Libraries’ Summer Reading Program empowers students to build their literacy skills through encouraging the self-selection of materials and incentives. Eight out of 10 studies show that students who read for fun perform better in school than students who do not. This summer we encourage you to adopt new patterns that can change your life and the lives of your children. Let’s make reading fun this summer!

Teen Volunteers

Teens can also volunteer during the summer for service credit. All new volunteers must fill out our online application. You will receive an email with instructions on how to complete the Teen Volunteer Program Orientation.

Stop by the Teen Space or email us at teens@altadenalibrary.org to learn more about the summer volunteer schedule.
