Volunteer at the Library

The Altadena Library District welcomes and relies on the support of dedicated volunteers! There are many ways to volunteer at both the Main Library and Bob Lucas Branch. Here are the in-person volunteer roles that are available.

Reports to: Library Manager, Branch & Literacy Services | Location: Variable, Space Available for Literacy Meetings at Bob Lucas Branch (2659 Lincoln Avenue)

  • Attend the tutor training workshop and learn how to tutor adults in literacy skills
  • Assist patrons with improving reading skills, writing, reading comprehension, enhancing speaking/pronunciation, gaining basic computer skills, resume writing, etc.
  • Additional tasks as assigned

Mandatory 6-month minimum commitment; typically 1-2 hours at least once a week

General Adult Volunteers

Reports to: Adult Volunteer Coordinator| Location: Main Library

Adult volunteers will work with staff members and/or with patrons for various assignments. Some examples of tasks:

  • Remove labels from new books
  • Shift book and media collections
  • Clean toys in youth spaces , other organizing
  • Inventory board games and program supplies
  • Assist with ongoing programs
  • other tasks that staff request

Mandatory two-month commitment; service is ongoing.

Volunteer Applications will be reviewed within 7 business days.

Tech Whisperers

Reports to: Library Manager, Branch & Literacy Services & Adult Volunteer Coordinator| Location: Main Library

Tech Whisperers will work directly with our patrons, showing them how to use library technology. Duties may include:

  • Answering questions on how to use web and computer desktop applications
  • Helping patrons use hardware (printers, scanners, fax, WIFI devices, etc.)
  • Assisting patrons with library applications and search tools

Mandatory two-month commitment; service is ongoing.

Reports to: Teen Librarian | Location: Main Library (600 E. Mariposa Street) and other locations as assigned

Teens 14-17 can complete service hours by assisting as volunteers in a variety of library programs and tasks that suit their schedules and interests. To become a teen volunteer, please fill out the Teen Volunteer Application at https://www.altadenalibrary.org/teens/#teenvolunteers.

Reports to: President of the Friends of the Altadena Library, a fundraising nonprofit in support of the Altadena Libraries | Location: Main Library (600 E. Mariposa Street)

  • Assist with book sorting and storing at the Main Library
  • Provide event setup and preparation support to the Friends of the Altadena Library with regular book sales
  • Provide special programs and events support as assigned

Reports to: President of the Altadena Library Foundation, a fundraising and advocacy nonprofit supporting the Altadena Libraries | Location: Variable

  • Assists with campaign mailings (folding, sorting, printing)
  • Provides setup, teardown, wayfinding, and other support for Foundation special events
  • Additional tasks as assigned
