From January 3 through February 27, the walls of the Community Room at the Main Library will feature the work of local artist Joyce Miles. Joyce was raised in Pasadena and attended Audubon, Elliot, John Muir, PCC and Cal State. She majored in art, and sociology and has been an exhibiting artist for the past 40 years. For the past 30 years Joyce has worked on behalf of homeless families in the Pasadena area. She has been a successful pioneer at helping homeless families obtain a better life. Joyce has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognition over her career. Her art has been on exhibit throughout California, Atlanta, and Washington D.C.
Of her art, she says, “My art depicts a variety of African Americans colorful life styles. I also enjoy painting nature in it’s natural setting.” Joyce’s art also delves into historic subjects to memorialize African American history. Her large body of work includes acrylics, water, oil, paintings and sculptures as well.
From January 4 through February 27, the Reading Court will showcase the art of students in Room 13/Eliot Arts. Room 13/Eliot Arts is an after-school art program at Eliot Arts Magnet Academy in Altadena which fosters four main pillars: Creative Expression, Collaboration, Philosophical Inquiry, and Business Enterprise. Students work in a studio environment and are able to use a variety of materials and are guided through different forms of expression, as led by an Artist-in-Residence, to create their own artwork and develop unique individual voices. They have the opportunity to display and sell their work at different venues and their signature event takes place at ArtNight Pasadena every spring and fall, where they display their art at Day One in Pasadena.
In celebration of Braille Literacy month, Braille Institute will be displaying braille technology from over the last 100 years, as well as their plans for the future, in the glass display case at the Main Library! Braille Institute is a non-profit organization offering a broad range of free programs, classes and services serving thousands of students of all ages to empower themselves to live more enriching lives with blindness and vision loss.
