Library Cards

A whole new world awaits you. Apply for your Altadena library card today.

An Altadena library card is available for free to any California resident. Your card gives you free access to tens of thousands of books, audiobooks, e-books, CDs, and DVDs. You will also have access to our online databases.



Fill out a Library Card Application and bring it to the Circulation desk. Proof of identification is required. Two sources of identification are required including a picture ID and verification of current address. For P.O. box holders, proof of a residential address must be shown before a post office box can be used as a mailing address.

Suitable ID:

  • Current drivers license or ID card.
  • Checkbook or bankbook.
  • Current printed bill.
  • Current canceled envelope.
  • Escrow papers or rental receipt.

TEACHER LOAN CARD: For all teachers preschool through 12th grade. Six week loans with 3 week renewal. Up to 50 items may be checked out. Applies to all items except DVDs & new books.  See also Teacher Services.

FOSTER YOUTH CARD: Register for a Foster Youth Card. 

CHILDREN'S LIBRARY CARD: Children 3 and up can sign up for a children's library card. Children under the age of 14 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the application.


Lost Cards

Lost/damaged cards may be replaced for a $2.00 replacement charge with ID.


Expired Cards

Borrowing information will be verified and your card renewed every 3 years.


Loan Periods

21 DAYS--All items except videogames & DVDs

7 DAYS--Videogames & DVDs

6 WEEKS--Vacation loans available on request for all items except new books and Videos/DVDs




Effective May 1, 2017, Altadena libraries do not charge overdue fines for late materials. Library patrons will receive notification of overdue items and will be billed for replacement and processing after 30 days overdue. Borrowing privileges will be suspended until materials are returned or district is compensated for lost materials.


Failure to return library items or pay for their replacement will result in having your account turned over to a collections agency. A $15 processing fee will be charged if the account is sent to collections.


Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Paying Fines Online
What credit cards do you accept?
The Altadena Library District currently does not accept credit cards.
Can I choose to pay only part of a fine?
No. If you have multiple fines and fees on your account, you may select which charges you want to pay (as long as they total at least $5.00); however, you     cannot pay a portion of any one fine online. If you would like to pay a portion of  a single fine, you can always visit the checkout desk at your library branch.
I paid to replace an item I lost, but I just found it. Can I return it and get a refund?
If it has been longer than 3 months since you paid the replacement fee, we cannot issue a refund. If it has been fewer than 3 months, you may be due a refund (less the maximum overdue fine and a service charge), but you must present the receipt that is provided during the online payment transaction.
I just paid a fine, but it still shows up on my account. What happened to my payment?
If you refresh your browser (hit the F5 key on your keyboard) or click on My Account again, the fines should update to reflect your payment. If they do not, please contact the library.

Interlibrary loans - $1.50. The borrowing agency may charge an additional fee.

Passports - $25.00 (fee to the library, see additional fees to the state in the Passport section)

Computer print copies - $.15/each Black & White, $.50/each Color

Photocopies - $.15/each Black & White, $.50/each Color

USB Flashdrives $10.00 -15.00/each

Earbuds/headphones - $2-$3 each

Lost materials cost of item/ +$7.00 processing fee

NSF Fee - $25.00

Notary Services - $15.00 each signature - CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE

Returned Check - $30.00


The Altadena Library District does not restrict access to library materials based on age, origin, background, or views.



Ways to Renew:

Most items can be renewed for 3 weeks if there is not a hold on the item. DVDs can be renewed 1 time if there is no hold on the item.



Holds can be placed on any circulating item for free.

Ways to place a hold:

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loans allow Altadena Library cardholders to get materials from other CA libraries. CDs and DVDs are not available through this service. The process usually takes from one to four weeks. Up to 5 requests may be taken.
