Storytelling Jam is a mix of storytelling styles and formats including informal writing
workshops, live performances, podcasting and a public radio show hosted by Lance
Workshops: The foundation of the Storytelling Jam will be the personal narrative
non-fiction storytelling workshops in the auditorium. These will be informal sessions with
a combination of writing and performing exercises with an emphasis of getting the
participants to tell or read their story in front of the group. Constructive feedback will be
given if the storyteller chooses to develop their stories for themselves and/or for the live
performances. Guest performers and storytelling coaches will be invited to attend some
of the workshops.
Live Performances: From the storytelling workshop we will develop stories to be
performed in front of a live audience. The first performances will start in the auditorium
and grow organically into the main room. The performances will be a mix of featured
performers from the workshops and invited special guest storytellers. A live
musician/band will provide the transitional music and play behind the storytellers that
want to jam. The performance will be on 8/21.
Podcasting & Public Radio: The live performances will be recorded and edited into a
podcast. Once the shows reach a consistent level of quality, the recordings with be
presented on the Public Radio Exchange (PRX).
A native of the San Fernando Valley, Lance Anderson started telling his stories in
1991 all around Los Angeles in alternative venues, galleries and theaters including the
HBO Workspace. During this time he taught physical theatre for the Education Division of
the Music Center of Los Angeles. In the early 2000’s he was a producer of Story Salon
currently based in North Hollywood. By March 2005 he was one of the original storytellers
to start a podcast, a month later he founded the influential group known as the LA
Podcasters. Then in 2006 Lance traveled to Liverpool, England to do the first live podcast
tour, along with being the featured speaker at the inaugural podcast forum at the
University of Cambridge. March marks his dozen year milestone of performing and
producing my pioneering podcast Verge of the Fringe.
